On August 5, 1961, a young black woman of trans experience led her chosen family to take a stand against homophobic and transphobic violence -- as they defended the Black Nite Tavern from invasion.
On August 5, 2024, we will dedicate the first LGBTQ historic landmark in Wisconsin history, so that the story of the Black Nite is never again at risk of being lost to time.
Join us for a commemoration ceremony featuring keynote speakers, community champions, and elected officials. The program will run from 3:30pm - 4:30pm with a community celebration afterwards at Explorium Brewpub.
We hope to not only honor the black and brown trans women who led our battle to #BeSeen, but educate our city on the experience of black and brown trans women today.
The Hoan Bridge, along with an assortment of downtown buildings, will be illuminated in trans pride colors after dusk to honor our local transgender community throughout history.
Our sincere thanks
We are grateful for the support of our local partners, who are helping us envision, plan and deliver a true community-first celebration.
We are extremely thankful to the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and Cream City Foundation for their financial support, as well as the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Milwaukee County Historical Society for making this memorial possible.
The Black Nite historic marker was entirely funded by private funds.
Special thanks to Visit Milwaukee for sponsoring the after-party at Explorium Brewpub.
