Celebrating Sharon Dixon: a warrior of women’s history

Join us Sunday, March 30 for an afternoon of sisterhood -- as we proudly celebrate a living legend!
The Hearts for History fundraiser runs through February 28.

Fifty years ago, Sharon made Milwaukee famous by opening the first local bar FOR women BY women. For generations prior, lesbian bars were always owned by straight men who exploited, gate-kept, and profiteered from the community.

Growing up in Hurley, Sharon was an unhoused youth at age 14. She found her way to Milwaukee shortly after Stonewall and quickly became part of the emerging gay liberation movement. After working at the River Queen and Leaded Shade, Sharon opened the Sugar Shack in 1975 with her partner JoAnn Kilsdonk.

She later went on to launch three more legacies: Kathy's Nut Hut (started as Shorty's Party Room,) Fannies, and most recently, Studio 200. She hosted numerous fundraisers, including Fannie’s Fest, and supported the community at MAP Fest and other local festivals.

As a bouncer, bartender, business owner, fundraiser, and friend, Sharon has taken care of countless Milwaukee women in their moments of crisis and celebration. And now it's time for us to take care of her.

After years of giving her all, Sharon found herself unhoused with an uncertain future. Her landmark building at 200 E. Washington was shockingly sold and demolished. Thanks to the thoughtful support of close friends, and a generous fundraising campaign, Sharon found access to safe housing and quality medical care.

The Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project, in partnership with La Cage, wants to bring women together for an old-fashioned, in-person, Old Timers reunion party. Join us as we celebrate memories of Sharon, women's spaces, and the good times we spent together.
